Braces Treatment at Smile Store Cork
Braces are orthodontic appliances, designed to guide your teeth into proper alignment. Our Orthodontists here at Smile Store can fit you with the most appropriate brace type for you, your lifestyle and your dental concerns.
If your teeth are crooked, crowded or uneven in any way, the right type of brace will gradually bring them into place for a more even smile and correct bite.
What Type of Brace is right for me?
There are a number of different types of orthodontic appliances, but they can all be put into two categories: ‘fixed’, meaning they stay put once they are fitted, and ‘removable’ which means they can be taken out by the patient at certain times.
Your teeth did not become crooked overnight, so any orthodontic treatment needs time to work to gradually move your teeth into the right spot. That’s why your treatment is unique for you; completely personalised to your particular case.
Gradual alignment of teeth with braces
Braces are a ‘fixed’ orthodontic appliance, used when your orthodontist wants to be very precise in guiding your teeth into place over a period of time.
You can eat and drink with braces, but you have to maintain excellent dental hygiene to make sure your teeth are clean and the braces don’t collect food particles.
Thanks to advances in orthodontics over the years, there are many different types of braces available these days to suit every need, age and dental issue.
Types of braces available at Smile Store – your options
Don’t panic- although they are known as traditional braces, today’s braces are a far cry from the big thick mouthfuls of metal that people used to have!
Modern slimline metal braces consists of brackets that are attached to the front of the teeth, and bands/wires that are passed through them and tightened, applying a gentle, gradual tension to coax teeth into place.
Brace materials are far more light, thin and comfortable than they were years ago, and there are options for children and teens that include coloured braces and bands, which have become cool and make kids less self-conscious about wearing them.
Depending on your particular case, you’ll see your Orthodontist regularly to have the braces adjusted, and treatment can last for 18-22 months but will vary by individual and age.
Ceramic (or ‘tooth-coloured’) Braces
These are the same size and shape as traditional braces but they are made from clear or tooth-coloured ceramic, and so are less noticeable against your teeth. Some may also come with tooth-coloured wires.
They’re more expensive, but ideal for people who need the degree of correction fixed braces provide but don’t want them to be too obvious.
Lingual refers to the tongue, as these braces are essentially similar to traditional braces but are attached on the inside of the teeth on the tongue side.
Lingual braces are trickier to place; can be hard to get used to and clean, and are pricier than regular braces – but they are invisible from the outside if you don’t want people to know you’re wearing braces at all.
They’re not suitable for every case and it depends on the degree of adjustment your need for your teeth, so your Orthodontist will go through your choices.
Invisalign falls into the ‘removable device’ category, and has become very well-known in recent years.
It’s more than a single device – the Invisalign system actually consists of a series of custom-made transparent plastic aligners, which slip over your teeth like a mouth guard.
They are removable, although you’re supposed to wear them for a fixed period of time each day but can pop them out for eating or brushing your teeth.
Depending on particular teeth and progress, the aligners are replaced every couple of weeks. They are almost invisible, which appeals to a lot of people, but are limited in the kind of realignment they provide. (read more about Invisalign Treatment at Smile Store here)

Extremely pleased with my treatment, I got braces & two implants to replace teeth that got damaged. Smile Store were very professional throughout & the treatment did not take as long as I thought it would. I was worried about pain with the implants but the local anaesthetic is so good, you don’t feel a thing. Feel like a new woman now; would highly recommend Smile Store.
